In an era where disinformation exploits identity to fuel division, we need narratives that do the opposite—ones that affirm identity while fostering connection. This is the mission of Reclaiming Our Narratives: A Practical Guide to Countering Identity-Based Disinformation, a new resource from the Organization for Identity and Cultural Development (OICD).
As a long-time collaborator and current Advisory Board member of the OICD, Trinetra’s CIO, Tassos Stassopoulos, had the privilege of contributing insights to this project. Our discussions drew from Trinetra’s work in emerging markets, where we observe firsthand how identity shapes perceptions and behaviours.
One key takeaway from the guide: When people feel their core identity is threatened, they often retreat into defensiveness – they simply dig in. The OICD proposes a transformative alternative—"Positive Identity Expansion"—a strategy that cultivates self-awareness and empathy while honouring differences.
The guide walks through how to meet identity needs like belonging and self-esteem in ways that open people up instead of shutting them down. Its approach is both practical and deeply rooted in real-world application.
At Trinetra, we recognize identity as a cornerstone of society, influencing not just politics but also economic and environmental progress. Understanding culture is essential to anticipating social shifts and driving meaningful change.
